Episode80- Nutrition Habits To Lower Cortisol

Welcome to another weekend short of The ZecoHealth Show

This is Weight Management Expert, Narado Powell Powell

This weekend’s short is a follow-up from last week’s.

Last weekend, I explained habits to help you lower cortisol & reduce stress.

Listen to that short before or after this one to have a full picture.

This weekend, I will go a little further & explain the role that nutrition plays in accomplishing this goal.

We know that stress raises cortisol, causes hormonal imbalances, weight gain, etc

That is why it is important to know how to lower stress naturally.

Before I want to remind everyone of The Zeco Recommendation Page, where I have products that I have recommended for health, fitness & fatloss

The link is in the shownotes & the description of the podcast

We know all the bad things stress causes so I will not rehash that.

Here are how foods help you handle stress.

They can do so in many ways.

Some can boost serotonin, others can cut levels of cortisol & adrenaline which are stress hormones that in excess can take a toll on your body.

In addition a healthy diet can help counter the impact of stress by strengthening your immune system & lowering your blood pressure.

Here are some foods that can help with these:

  1. Complex Carbs

Complex carbs take longer to digest & keep your blood sugar steady.

All carbs prompt the brain to make serotonin so complex carbs can provide your brain a steady supply

Download Glycemic Load App & use it as a guide to know which foods are complex.

  1. Oranges

The powerful antioxidant VitaminC can boost your immune system & curb levels of stress hormones.

So many fruits that are rich in vitaminC can be beneficial.

  1. Spinach

These & most dark leafy greens are rich in magnesium.

Too little magnesium can lead to stress responses like headaches & fatigue.

  1. Fatty Fish

The Omega-3 content of fatty fish like Salmon & Tuna can prevent surges in stress hormones.

In fact, having at least 1 to 1 Omega-3 to Omega-6 can improve stress levels.

Which means there are connections between chronic inflammation & stress.

Pistachios & other nuts are also sources of Omega-3.

  1. Avocadoes-

Getting adequate potassium can lower blood pressure as well.

Bananas and other potassium rich fruits can be great as well.

Avocados are low in carbs, but rich in healthy Omega-3 fats.

  1. Eat carbs at night

Our brain prefers glucose.

Going to bed without adequate glucose can raise cortisol levels & disrupt sleep quality.

Do not go crazy, but some complex carbs before bed like berries or fruits can change your life.

The entire list will be in the shownotes so you can use it as a guide.

Enjoy your weekend fam!

Episode77- Connection of Cortisol Levels & Testosterone

Welcome to another weekend short of The ZecoHealth Show

This is Weight Management Expert

Narado Zeco Powell

Someone reached out to me few weeks ago and asked about the connection between cortisol levels & Testosterone

There are some connections that we need to be aware of & I will explore them in today’s short.

So stick around

Before I begin, remember to check out The Zeco Recommendation Page for products and I services I recommend for health, fitness & fatloss

Along with my discount code so you can save some money.

The link is in The shownotes and the description of the episode

With that being said,

Let’s begin

First, we need to know what is testosterone and why it is important

Well according to Healthline

Testosterone is a hormone found in humans, as well as in other animals. In men, the testicles primarily make testosterone. Women’s ovaries also make testosterone, though in much smaller amounts.

Yeah, women make and use testosterone as well

The production of testosterone starts to increase significantly during puberty and begins to dip after age 30 or so.

Here are some things that can happen with low testosterone, especially in men

  • decreased sex drive
  • less energy
  • weight gain
  • feelings of depression
  • moodiness
  • low self-esteem
  • less body hair
  • thinner bones

In women, they can experience

  • low libido
  • reduced bone strength
  • poor concentration
  • depression

Again, testosterone is important for women as well

Now, there are many habits that can improve testosterone levels and I will discuss them in a follow-up short, but as promised, let’s discuss cortisol

Let’s begin with this PubMed study which has shown the administration of cortisol into the circulation at rest will result in reduced blood testosterone levels.

Many researchers have used these results to imply that physical exercise induced cortisol increases would perhaps result in subsequent reductions in circulating testosterone levels

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24431964/#:~:text=Human%20research%20has%20shown%20the,reductions%20in%20circulating%20testosterone%20levels.

The link to to the study are in the shownotes

Now, correlation does not necessarily mean causation, but what we do know is that excessive cardio can lower testosterone levels which is connected to lower testosterone, loss of muscle mass, etc.

Here is a another study from The University of Texas at Austin which indicates high levels of the stress hormone cortisol play a critical role in blocking testosterone’s influence on competition and domination, according to new psychology research.

Again, the link to the fantastic study is in the shownotes

https://news.utexas.edu/2010/09/27/stress-hormone-blocks-testosterones-effects-study-shows/

Check out both studies, they are fantastic.

Also listen to my earlier shorts from earlier in the year regarding exercise to learn how to implement a proper training program for weight management

Now, let’s discuss how to lower cortisol levels:

  1. Get adequate sleep
  2. Exercise
  3. Learn to recognize and improve stress levels
  4. Have a breathing technique
  5. Have fun and laugh
  6. Maintain healthy relationships
  7. Eat a nutritious diet

I have episodes and shorts on these habits so you can learn more in depth

Next weekend, I will release a short on a nutritious diet to lower stress

Enjoy your week fam!

Episode74- Sunscreens Recalled Due To Carcinogenic Properties

Welcome to another weekend short of The ZecoHealth Show.

This is Weight Management Expert, Narado Zeco Powell.

In this weekend’s short I will briefly talk about certain sunscreens that have been recently recalled due to carcinogenic properties.

This is important to know because our skin is our largest organ.

This means that what we absorb will go directly to our blood.

So, you can see how problematic this can be.

Before I begin, please remember to check out The Zeco Recommendation Page with products I have recommended for health, fitness & fatloss

Plus my discount codes are there so you can save some money.

Now, let’s start the show.

Like I mentioned above, our skin is our largest organ

This is why we need to be diligent of what we put on our skin

Let’s examine certain articles and I will put the links to all articles in the shownotes

This first one is from Good Housekeeping, titled

Everything You Need to Know About Recent Sunscreen Recalls

https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/beauty/anti-aging/a37273260/benzene-in-sunscreen/

It explains that experts are examining how Benzene, a cancer causing chemical ended up in sprays & lotions.

In July of 2021, Johnson & Johnson issued a voluntary recall of several sunscreens from Aveeno & Nuetrogena because they contained Benzene, a known carcinogen.

Benzene is extremely volatile and impacts your health immediately.

To make things worse, Benzene is usually found in crude oil and gasoline.

J & J isn’t the only culprit

An article from news outlet WKRN details that the FDA asked to recall 40 bathes of sunscreens, including, but not limited to, Coppertone, CVS Health, Fruit of The Earth, Raw Elements, Sun Bum, Banana Boat, Top Care, Everyday & Elta MD.

The link to the full article is also in the shownotes

zecohealth.com/recalledsunscreens

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnet.com/google-amp/news/sunscreen-recall-2021-coppertone-neutrogena-and-more/

This short is not to scare anyone, but to make you aware.

Think about limiting your use of sunscreens & if you must wear it, think of all natural.

Protect yourself!

Remember to check out The Zeco Recommendation Page.

Enjoy your weekend fam!
